2008-11-25 11:18 PM The Secret Puppy and Other Tales Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (0) I have had a very busy month, not that anything particularly interesting has happened to me personally, but I've had a front row seat for a lot of unusual things:
On my way home a few Saturdays ago, I was waiting for an N at Union Square when I heard a thump from the other side of the platform. When I looked over, I saw a guy looking down into the tracks, frowning. I thought he had dropped his bag or umbrella or something until he started shouting, "Hey, buddy get up! You have to get up!" A few people started yelling for help; someone ran up the stairs to find a cop, and all of a sudden there were three men jumping down onto the tracks to lift the guy, who was still unconscious, to safety. The whole thing happened in about twenty seconds -- and about twenty seconds after that, a train showed up. At least one of the men who got down on the tracks was a police officer; they were all in plainclothes, but after they had set the man on one of the benches, I noticed one of them had a badge hanging from a chain around his neck. When I got on my train, the guy was starting to come around, so I think he was okay. But it was still kind of startling: both that it happened at all, and that it happened so fast. Last week, one of the other offices on my floor at work was celebrating someone's birthday and this faculty member happened to be there visiting some other office while carrying a set of bagpipes. So after he heard them singing "Happy Birthday" he came over and played it for them on his bagpipes. It was very random. But you probably want to know about the secret puppy. The secret puppy belongs to someone in one of the other offices at work (not the same office that had the impromptu bagpiper). He's not really a secret, in the sense that everyone on the floor knows about him because he yips occasionally, but I'm pretty sure if the building management or central administration knew about his existence, he would not be welcome. Anyway, he's a three month old bichon/shih-tzu mix, and he looks kind of like this picture, except a little smaller, fluffier, and more of a light caramel color. He's only temporary; he's just not old enough to leave at home yet, so his owner brings him to work with her. But he's very cute and it's kind of nice just knowing he's there, squirreled away in his owner's purse/carrier, while I'm spending all day transcribing boring conference proceedings. So that's pretty much it. Nothing spectacular, just the random nature of my life at the moment. Tomorrow I'm off to Oklahoma for Thanksgiving. Whether you're traveling, hosting, or just having a quiet weekend alone, enjoy your holiday! Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
