Music: John Hartford's "Steam-Powered Aeroplane" TV/Movie: The West Wing Link o' the Day: http://www.sluggy.com My original plan for the evening was to work on updating a webpage that's in sore need of updating. I'll probably be starting that project tonight--but I won't be finishing it. Had some additional changes to the Hollywood's Golden Age book the editor wanted before he showed the first-stage galleys to the author and spent the evening taking care of that. Wednesday night isn't the best night for me to work as one of the only four shows I regular watch are on. On Wednesdays it's The West Wing. Sunday's is lousy for work as I fill that with Futurama, The Simpsons, and Law & Order: CI. (Family Guy used to be on this list until it was cancelled.) Not bad as this leaves me five nights that pretty much uninterupted for work. So tonight, after signing off from here, I'll do work on my webpage which will list my latest sales and add a page that presents my freelance typesetting service. Hmm, tonight's West Wing is a repeat... looks like my concentration won't be so divided after all. Tomorrow night there's nothing on TV, so I've blocked the whole evening for writing. Mind you, even when I'm not writing, I'm writing. At the very least I'm taking notes, looking over my outlines. Jotting down lines of dialogue and description on diner napkins (and in the process, learning that I can write in upward strokes so as not to tear the paper). My pockets overflow with the litter of dozens of notes taken on folded index cards, more napkins, receipts, and unfolded cigarette boxes. When I get home at the end of the workday, the first order of business is to deposit them in front of my computer--then go nap. When I get up, I look over the notes scribbled and type them into a text file and send them to myself for transfer onto my laptop (which is quicker and easier than hunting up a disk and the external diskdrive for my old laptop). While I'm confessing to the haphazard way I take notes--here are two more things I've learned. 1. While taking notes via a personal tape recorder work for some--it doesn't work for me. Nope. Nuh-uh. No-how. 2. Having access to the net at work is a boon. I keep my unix shell account open in a background window with a word processing program called "pico" loaded. I've written whole pages during the occaisional slow periods. For folks who don't have a unix shell w/ their internet access, but do have web access, get an account at Yahoo and make use of their notepad feature. If you're not concerned about personal mail going through your workplace's system--just keep an e-mail window open and do your marginal composing there and then just mail it to yourself at the end of the workday. Save as you go along. All right--wisdom dispensed... and now... to html! Cheers! --John Teehan Read/Post Comments (1) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
