TV/Movie: The Family Guy Link o' the Day: B-52's webpage At last the work week is over! And I survived! Who knew? I even got a good amount of freelance work done tonight and some more editing. The boy is hot. The boy is also tired... whew. I am _so_ going to sleep in for a bit tomorrow. I may not even get up until 8. Maybe even 8:30! I've been following some online conversations about the ephemeral nature of weblogs, especially when compared to publications like fanzines. Sure, electronic journals seem to appear more fleeting than an actual printed page, but as some have pointed out, the printed page suffers the ravages of time. Heck, we don't even have to be talking about fanzines or magazines. What about books? Is there any guarantee that anything written down will last forever? Moses received the Ten Commandments carved into stone and even those got busted up. Now let's conduct an experiment in imagination--stretch your mind and think about the oldest piece of writing in existence. A dead sea scroll? Heiroglyphics? Sumerian tablets? Incan calendars? Runes? Let's broaden this to any man-made representation. Cave drawings? Fetish idols? What's going to survive the longest? When the seas have dried up and the mountains worn down. When the constellations in the sky have shifted into all new forms. When the sun has swollen into a red giant--what's the only piece of representational work that's going to survive. What's the closest we've ever come to a piece of communication that's could conceivably last forever? Huh... when I started writing this, I had one answer. I've just thought of a second. Guess what I'm thinking of. And there's no one correct answer. I'm hoping that y'all come up with different answers than mine. The only rule it has to tangible or measurable. I'll post mine Sunday evening. * * * Today's link goes to the official B-52's webpage. They're a fun band, kind of post-punk. I don't really think of them as New Wave--they're too much fun to listen to. This page has a good history of the band, a webcast, and some other goodies. Enjoy!
