Music: John Hiatt, best of TV/Movie: NPR (radio) Link o' the Day: Dr. Gafia's Fan Terms by rich brown. I've been thinking about writing more and more. Taking some stabs at some new pieces, and doing some editing on some older, unsold pieces. The hard part, I'm finding, is re-establishing the routine I had down for so long. It reminds me a little about one of the analogies used when one learns Japanese--or rather, starts to forget their Japanese. It's called "letting the stone get cold." By that, it's supposed to mean that while one learns (or writes regularly) they're sitting on a big rock that's uncomfortable and cold. After a while your butt gets acustomed to it, and the seat of your pants warms up a bit. You can get up and stretch now and then, and the rock still retains some of that warmth. But if you get up and don't sit back down again for a while, the stone gets cold, and the process begins again. This applies to a lot of things in life, I guess. What it means for me at this particular moment is trying to get that stone warm and comfy again. We'll see how it goes. * * * Freelance projects continue. I got a decent amount done today, but have more to do on the morrow. My new job, so far, helps out a lot in this regard. The hours are still taking some getting used to. For years, I've been accustomed to rising at 5am and going to bed around 10 or 11pm. Now I find myself getting up around 8 or 9 and going to bed around 2 or 3 in morning. It's really not that bad. I actually get more done during the day, but I miss being around for the sunrise. I've not done much fishing since the weather got nicer. Maybe this weekend I'll try for some opportunities. Just because I habitually went fishing at sunrise last year doesn't mean I have to do it like that this year. Heck, I might even have better luck at a different time of day. Hey, a silver lining! hehe.. hokay. Enough for now. I'm going to chill with some reading for a bit. * * * Today's link goes to Dr. Gafia's Fan Terms by rich brown. I include this link today in memory of rich brown (aka Dr. Gafia) who passed away recently after complications from surgery at the age of 64. rich (he preferred to lowercase his name) was one of the greats of fandom, with many friends from across a wide spectrum of fandom although he mostly made his home in fanzine fandom where he contributed much to its culture. Like many fans, he could be a hard nut, but in my experience he was one of the more saner and gentlemanly folks I'd met there. He not only contributed to Sleight of Hand but offered a lot of support and advice in its creation. He will be greatly missed. Read/Post Comments (1) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
