It's Snowing!

I know I made fun of myself for getting excited for snow... but today’s snowfall warrants some excitement. I think the official total is 6-9 inches across the metro area, but I swear we got closer to 12 inches:

These pictures were taken this morning. We were still getting 2 inches per hour until about 10am. I live 6 miles from my office downtown. On a good day my commute takes 9 minutes thanks to back roads and side streets. On a bad day it takes 15 minutes if I miss certain lights. Today it took 1 hour and 10 minutes. 1 hour and 10 minutes. It didn't help that the stop light on Hennepin and Oak Grove wasn't working. Luckily most Minnesotans know what to do when the light is blinking red. Treat it like a 4 way stop, right? Easier said then done when we're working with more than 8 lanes of traffic. I kept my fingers crossed the whole way to work that no one else would be there and I could leave a post-it proving that I made the trek in on a blizzard-y day to get bonus points and then leave before we got snowed in. But no. Three people made it in before me. I stayed the whole day. :(

I'm not complaining about the snow, though. I loved every minute of my commute this morning. My car is meant for this weather. A pickup was spinning out in front of me at one point and started backing up to get more traction. He almost ran into me but I honked repeatedly and drove around him, up the hill he was sliding down, and drove off like there was no snow on the ground. It was a small victory for Subes.

Here's the beautiful Mpls after the storm:

There's full sized versions of all of these on my photo page

Yes, I took a few of those while driving. In a safe way, of course.

Now I just have to make sure I follow the rules of the dreaded Snow Emergency. My building is on a block that borders a Snow Emergency route (no parking from 9pm to 8am the day of a snow emergency), a parkway (no parking 8am to 8pm the day after a snow emergency) and a regular street (no parking on even side of street the day after a snow emergency from 8am - 8pm and no parking on the odd side of the street on day 2 of the snow emergency). In the 3 years I've lived on this block, I haven't been towed yet. But it takes a good 5 minutes of me sitting in my car trying to figure out when I will be moving it again to avoid the traffic cops who ticket before the plows come. Someday I'll have the privilege of a garage. Until then...
