Last night I went to Seu Jorge at the Cedar Cultural Center. You may know him from The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. He was the Brazilian guy who sang acoustic covers of David Bowie songs in Portuguese:

He is unbelievable. I could listen to his voice for hours and hours. He has two albums of original music and they are phenomenal. Buy them: Cru and Carolina

What I couldn't listen to for hours and hours were the group of drunk people who I assume were from Brazil (they all spoke what I think was Portuguese and were wearing shirts that said "Brazil" on them.) There were only 4 of them, 3 guys one girl, but they made more noise than 10.

When Seu started they screamed and yelled and tried to get closer. At first it was pretty cute. One guy and the girl were dancing up a storm. So much so that a circle formed around them. Well, probably more because the guy was bumping into everyone. He paused briefly to pound his beer. Then his two friends came over dragging two confused looking blonde girls with them. The group proceeded to take pictures of Seu, his band, themselves, themselves with Seu in the background, each other, their feet, the stage, themselves, the girls, the guys, the stage, their feet, Seu. I'm probably in the background of 90% of the pictures. Glaring. Or rolling my eyes. Or with my hands covering my eyes because the flash was blinding me.

Then the first girl and guy left and the 2 guys with their blonde girls stayed and tried to partner dance with them. One guy kept grabbing the girl's hand and putting it up into the air... and into my face. I told him to move, please. He did. But for the next 2 or 3 songs, the guys had their backs to the stage talking with the blonde girls. Flirting. Laughing. I felt like I was watching two simultaneous episodes of Blind Date. Only without the clever pop-ups making it less than entertaining.

At one point Seu was on stage alone and performed a short acoustic set which include "Rebel, Rebel" and "Starman" by David Bowie. I couldn't have been happier. Except the drunk guy started yelling "CAAARO LEEEENA!" since "Carolina" is the title track from his 2002 album and I guess he wanted to hear it. The whole audience turned around to look at him because he happened to yell it during a silent pause. He had a very loud voice.

I like to think I'm an easy going concert goer. Especially when I'm there by myself. I have no one to worry about. I can stand where I want, leave when I want, etc. But last night I felt high maintenance. Everyone was bothering me. Everyone was affecting my enjoyment of the show. Maybe I need beer next time to calm down and help me deal with the rest of the drunk audience members.
