Last night I went to the last showing of the 48 Hour Film Project. (After I finished eating Linguini with Clams and Sautéed Hair.)

They've been showing the films in groups for the last week or so at the Riverview Theater in south Minneapolis. Last night was the Best OF Minneapolis category and all of the films had won awards. They were fantastic! I was so proud of my city and the talent and creativity we have here. The head guy who MC'd the event said that we had the 3rd largest number of entries in the country. Yay! Well, we did until LA opened up their registration again and jumped from 4th to 3rd. Cheaters.

The gist of this festival is that you make a film in 48 hours. All creative aspects have to take place within the 48 hours. Writing, filming, editing, and all that goes along with. It blows my mind that people can actually accomplish, not just a decent short film, but an awesome one in such a short time.

The teams pick a genre from a hat before the contest starts: Spy, Drama, Comedy, Western, etc. Each film has to have a certain line of dialogue ("Thanks for your help. Thanks a lot."), a certain prop (a wallet), and a certain character (Frank or Frankie Mooney, a DJ) included in the movie.

The Minneapolis website has a list of all the award winners from last night. My favorites were "Conversion Van" and "Dangerous Proximity" although they were all really good.

"Conversion Van" was about a girl who went to a leadership conference and accidentally ended up in a suicide cult. Her boyfriend and his friend (a guy who I totally knew!) go to save her. Their theme was "Road Movie" so most of the movie was them driving to find the cult. It was hilarious, clever and entertaining!

"Dangerous Proximity" was a spy movie. It was a TV show about the corporate world of being a spy. The spies worked in the ducts from 8-5, there was a "Starducts" serving coffee, duct-romance, etc. I could never explain it well enough to do it justice so I'll leave it at that. It won Best Picture and will go on to compete in the national contest later this year. It was fantastic!

Anyone who is in the area next year should make this a must see!
