Just received more interesting information regarding travel and packing to go to Russia. I quote:
International flights allow 2 carry on pieces per person (remember you will have a diaper bag as one piece. A purse also counts as one carry-on). You can check 2 bags per person, up to 70 lbs each. Domestic flights in Russia allow only 40 lbs per bag. However, it is possible you can leave some baggage at your hotel in Moscow if you know you will be returning. There will be no one to carry your luggage. There are many baby care items you can purchase in Russia such as diapers, formula, food, pacifiers, etc. Consider purchasing while there. Bring warm clothing for your child, including a snowsuit with feet, a hat (yes, even with a snowsuit hood!), and mittens. This level of "bundling" is a cultural norm in Russia and is to be expected. Calling cards may not work. Use a phone in the lobby of your hotel, or a pay phone. Some hotels will charge for minutes used, even with a calling card. You may also want to call your credit card company in advance to inform them of your travels. This way, they will not flag your credit card for fraudulent activity. Other suggestions for gifts: costume jewelry, scarf, stationary sets, towel sets, Bath and Body products, ties, "gifty" items from your area, picture frames. Inappropriate adult gifts include hotel products, fresh fruits/vegetables, homemade baked goods, and cash. Most families will create a "care package" of gifts for the orphanage. Target the age group of your child. You will have no more than 10 days' notice prior to travel; more likely, 4-5 days. You will sometimes have the option of staying with a host family, depending on the region. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
