Roman awoke at 5:15am. Oh my gosh. Got him into our bed at 5:40am, and he laid there okay until about 6am. Then we watched Pooh. Grrr.

Started my intelligent morning with a lecture on Reconstruction; its attempts at success and its failures. Breakout session was more of the same discussion, with topics such as land distribution to newly-freed blacks ("40 acres and a mule!"), and whether reparations, and what type of reparations, should be applied to descendants of slavery.

After lunch of brats, bean salad, chips, and cheesecake, we returned to our breakout groups. Talk and examples on how to use late 1800s-era newspapers in the classroom. Then the meat of our project was explained to us. We had the rest of the afternoon to work with our groups. We came up with a focus question, 9 of our 10-15 required documents, and two of the three activities we must come up with. Plus we get time Wed. and Thurs. to work on our projects.

Focus question: How did the draft riots of 1863 demonstrate the racial and ethnic tensions in the North?

And bonus: I found a map showing the damaged blocks of Detroit after the riot of 1863. Our professors had said there were no images.
