By education and experience - Accountant with a specialty in taxation. Formerly a CPA (license has lapsed). Masters degree in law of taxation from University of Denver. Now retired. Part time work during baseball season as receptionist & switchboard operator for the Colorado Rockies. This gig feeds my soul in ways I have trouble articulating. One daughter, and four grandchildren. I share the house with two cats; a big goof of a cat called Grinch (named as a joke for his easy going "whatever" disposition); and Lady, a shelter adoptee with a regal bearing and sweet little soprano voice. I would be very bereft if it ever becomes necessary to keep house without a cat.

A Blanche duBois for the 21st century

My part time job for tax season is located in a newish mixed use development of low rise office buildings, retail, and residences of varying degrees of luxury. The parking facilities nearest to our office are mostly utilized by various customers coming and going, FedEx deliveries, trash pickup services, and so on. There are a few planters here and there, but it's pretty much utilitarian concrete or nothing in that part of the complex.

A Canadian goose is nesting on one of the planter boxes, sitting ensconced among the bark and bare branched shrubs. Her nest contains down which she has yanked from some bare patches underneath her wings. It's been pretty cold and wintry the last couple of weeks - Easter Sunday was just plain nasty with strong cold wind, and steady wet snow.

This is the second year she's been there, and one of the office workers nearby knows about wildlife rehabilitation and is primed to get her and her goslings to a body of water as soon as the little ones hatch. Various people bring her food - small cans of low sodium corn, the ends of loaves of bread, salt free chips and such. She hisses and acts quite threatening when people are near, and has been known to open her wing and thump someone reaching too close.

One of my coworkers and I decided to name her, and after a day or two of contemplation we have begun to call her Blanche, after Tennesee Williams famed lost soul from A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, who "had always depended on the kindness of strangers."
