Woodstock's Blog Books and other stuff I feel like discussing By education and experience - Accountant with a specialty in taxation. Formerly a CPA (license has lapsed). Masters degree in law of taxation from University of Denver. Now retired. Part time work during baseball season as receptionist & switchboard operator for the Colorado Rockies. This gig feeds my soul in ways I have trouble articulating. One daughter, and four grandchildren. I share the house with two cats; a big goof of a cat called Grinch (named as a joke for his easy going "whatever" disposition); and Lady, a shelter adoptee with a regal bearing and sweet little soprano voice. I would be very bereft if it ever becomes necessary to keep house without a cat. |

2007-10-01 7:11 AM More on the Sami I found this
This entry comes closest to answering the question I had about how the misnomers "Lapps" and "Lapland" came into widespread use in the first place. Our group leader Randi, who has many friends in Norway, pointed out that the Sami regard being referred to as "Lapps" in much the same way that Comanche, Navaho, or Lakota regard being called "redskins." When I have time to Google extensively on a certain topic, I'm usually glad I took the time, since I manage in the long run to find something out. One of the questions I had the day we were there was how the term "Lapland" began to be used. According to the Wikipedia entry, the terms means "outland" in a southern Scandanavian language.
