By education and experience - Accountant with a specialty in taxation. Formerly a CPA (license has lapsed). Masters degree in law of taxation from University of Denver. Now retired. Part time work during baseball season as receptionist & switchboard operator for the Colorado Rockies. This gig feeds my soul in ways I have trouble articulating. One daughter, and four grandchildren. I share the house with two cats; a big goof of a cat called Grinch (named as a joke for his easy going "whatever" disposition); and Lady, a shelter adoptee with a regal bearing and sweet little soprano voice. I would be very bereft if it ever becomes necessary to keep house without a cat.

Coors Field Nugget one

Another very satisfying win last night at Coors Field.

Pitcher Juan Nicasio was hit by a line drive direct to the neck in a very scary incident in August of last year. He was out for the rest of the season with a broken vertebra, but the injury could have ended his career and had a drastic impact on his physical health for the rest of his life.

The Rockies trainers and the EMT's who were present the evening of the injury did everything right, and within a few weeks Nicasio was back at the stadium for every game, and even dressed for the game on September 11, for the elaborate recognition of the tenth anniversary of the tragedy in New York and Washington. He was on the field with the rest of the team to unfurl the large flag used on various special occasions.

Those of us who work in the lobby saw him often during the rest of the season. I was always encouraged by his bright smile and shining eyes. Even though the large heavy neck brace he wore meant he had to turn his whole upper body to answer a greeting, it was clear he was recovering.

He was scheduled for an intensive rehab period over the winter months. The effort was worth it - he showed up at spring training looking no worse for wear.

Last night he won his first game. When he came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth to bat for himself, a signal that he would continue to pitch into late innings, he got a standing ovation from the crowd. He capped the evening by getting a hit and an RBI to boot.

After one out in the top of the seventh, he left for middle reliever Esmil Rogers to take over.

While it's very nice to be rooting for a winning team with prospects for the playoffs as the weeks roll by, it's even nicer to see a truly happy ending to what had the potential to be anything but.
