2003-10-20 4:21 PM Maybe It's Inevitable to Become What I Wanted to Avoid Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.
In all three classes today I continued the discussion on the constellations. We finished (before the exam) with Piscis Austrinus, so today I started with the constellation below that, Grus, and worked my way towards the story of Perseus and Andromeda. This is more or less the movie "Clash of the Titans" although I didn't mention that in any of the classes. And no one seems to have made the connection anyway, which probably means none of them remembers seeing the movie. All the best otherwise I would have been innundated with questions of why the Sea Monster there wasn't a whale. There were questions about the origin of Pegasus, since in some versions he is a gift of Zeus, either to Perseus or Hercules. I just said that if you're relying on the movies, don't, because any example of adaptation will show signs of distortion. And I also said different accounts exist even in the original Greek plays anyway. There were some instances where students would ask something that I had already mentioned earlier, showing that they weren't listening. Just like the entrance exam yesterday maybe I should start asking them to be quiet before I continue. Either that or threaten them (like I did in one of my previous classes) that it would be their loss if what they weren't listening to showed up in the test. I could also just write everything on the board, and refuse to answer questions that are already up there for them to read. I used to think I could teach effectively without having to become the type of teacher I used to have and disliked. Now I'll have to reassess that because in the course of adapting my teaching style to fit the new generations of students, I may have to resort to that.
