2003-12-02 4:10 PM It's Nice to Hear that I'm Appreciated, Even Relatively Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.
I waited for the shuttle today even though I was at the gas station at around 6:30am and the convenience store there still hadn't put in any juice and softdrinks dispensers, much less anything besides instant noodles that I could have for a satisfying breakfast. Had to settle for buying canned iced tea and having instant champorado in the office. The shuttle was early though, and actually left even though there was only me and the college faculty secretary onboard. It wat 6:56am on my watch when we got to the campus, and after we got off, the other driver admonished our driver for leaving the gas station too early. He promptly drove out again. I guess the only anecdote left worth mentioning from yesterday is that in my last two classes, there were two groups that did not read the instructions thoroughly, and put the cream in the cup of hot water. For the first group they actually achieved a three-dimensional looking nebula instead of a galaxy (they put less than a spoonful of cream, and it was warm water, not hot, that led to incomplete dissolving), and I hope their camera was able to capture the image well despite having no contrast in the background. I shouldn't expect any more from freshman lecture classes who probably hadn't had any science laboratory since high school where strict adherence to the directions provided by the instructor is drilled to them every meeting. Today in mathematical methods, instead of starting on a new topic, I started on another type of problem for the previous topic, which was requested by some students. The students actually didn't want to start on the new and a relatively difficult topic, that involves exponentials and logarithms, saying it should be part of the sequel subject instead. But we still have more than five lecture hours left, so if what they say is true, it's better that they have advance topics in MM2 than be behind and have their teacher then tackle comprehensively topics he or she would assume they only had to review. "But," they said, "YOU'RE our MM2 teacher!" Flattering, but something that still isn't set in stone, even if what they said about requesting it from the administration is true. That reminds me: a former student who also went to the sportsfest last Saturday said some of her batchmates had pre-enrolled in an environmental science course, and my name was in their enrollment form as their teacher. She said their other batchmates, some of them my former students who also had another science elective requirement, then scrambled to enroll in the same subject. I told her I didn't know about that. It could be that the chairman put my name on the preliminary load assignment list under that subject, but he hasn't posted it in the faculty room or he changed it after the pre-enrollment deadline. Today was also the last 12-1250pm make up class. I discussed one of the seatwork problems from the 8-930am that EVERYONE who submitted got wrong, just to make sure that they know how to solve it correctly, before going to the exponentials. Didn't get to the complicated parts though. I'll take that up on Thursday, but for now, it seems they already know how to solve these simple parts. Hope they can keep up as we go along.
