Wrapping Up Loose Ends

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Last day of changing grades today for graduating students, which, apparently, includes my thesis advisee, or so he said. After all, he declared that he already processed all the documents for graduation pending getting a passing grade in his research subject.

But it's 6pm and when he passed by at around 5pm when me and my co-teachers had a snack, he thought I had already gone home. I don't know whether he had finished binding his final copies by then, or if he had finished the poster file that is supposed to be part of the CD that he should submit. But I doubt it.

After all, he only asked me about the poster file this morning, even though he knew about the new thesis guidelines and requirements since the first week of December.

I do know that all three of his panelists have signed his approval sheet, even though the chair of the panel admitted that she just signed it assuming that the other two members of the panel had already seen the paper and the software and approved it.

Last Saturday Ricky told the student to go to his house in Paranaque to show him the software and have the approval sheet signed. That's probably the most (physical) effort we've seen the student do for his thesis.

It was mid afternoon by the time he returned, so he just went home afterwards, since the chair of the department told him he would be available for signing this morning.

In fact, the chairman got here before the student did, even though I told him to go here at 8am because the earlier he had the approval sheet signed the earlier he can get his final copies bound.

Saturday afternoon he was still asking about how to print out his source code for the appendix, if he was going to use the school paper with the one-inch margins and how the commands were going to be word wrapped. When he finally called the chairman at home (because it had been more than five years since I advised a thesis with a program and the format had probably changed) the chairman told him that the source code is only in the CD and not in the printout.

Even the chair of the panel (Cecil) had the attitude of resignation towards the whole matter by the end. We are all moderately satisfied with his results, and now he's the problem of whoever will employ him. And if he cops the same work ethic that he showed with his thesis, they most likely won't be as forgiving.

At the very least, I have source codes I can modify at my whim to fit my specifications, as well as pass on to the students in Computer Science who are doing their thesis on the same topic.

That's one of the perks of being in a relatively supervisory position and getting to delegate tasks I otherwise would not have time for.
