Troubleshooting a Laboratory Manual

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

I changed the data tables to be filled and the procedure for the experiment on uniform acceleration (just tweaking some typographical and equation errors, as well as clarifying some vague parts) for the Friday class.

It turns out my cousin was the leader of his group so he had to read the new procedure all over again during class instead of performing the procedure in the manual he had already read beforehand. I guess the same is true with the other leaders who prepared.

The First Friday mass was from 730am to 830am, so I couldn't attend it, nor could David and I give the quiz at 8am then tell the students that those who want to attend the mass may do so as long as they return by 830am, because by that time the mass would be half over.

There were at least two students who did attend the mass, and they showed up in class a little before 9am. There was no reprimand, except from their groupmate who started out performing the experiment alone, was joined by another member a few minutes later, who left again for parts unknown before the others showed up.

Again I had to remind the students to perform all the measurements first before completing the computations. And some of them do not know how to delegate work, as one person may be completing the table while the others are just sitting around her watching, when they could be performing the next part, drawing the graphs or answering the questions at the end of the experiment.

Maybe there should be a part in the preliminary activities about that, besides measurements, errors and graphing. With more members than the minimum three, they have the potential for finishing the experiment earlier than groups with less members.

I'd give bonus points to the leader for doing that, but sometimes the more industrious students take initiative without prompting, and I don't want to give undue credit to the leader for that. I also don't think awarding additional points to those who finish early helps either, as it ends up with rushed jobs instead of carefully thought-out ones.

The judging of the school sticker design contest was yesterday. The entries were on the board at the landing on top of the second floor middle stairs, right beside the prayer warriors "booth". Prominently displayed at the bottom of the board was a tag proclaiming it was "organized by the Entrepreneur's Guild".

There are also already announcements posted in the hallways about the painting contest, although there is no mention that the winning artist/s will get to design the mural for the blank wall bordering the quadrangle. I asked my cousin if he was going to join, and he just laughed. He'll stick to engineering, he says, and sports.

Lastly the Paintball Club and Student Org coordinator Ronnie had a late meeting Thursday night about organization of an inter-school paintball tournament in the football field. Yesterday Ronnie asked the Registrar's Office for a list of the nearby high schools and colleges they could invite. This would at least be interesting to watch, if I don't get to participate.
