2004-04-26 1:18 PM One Student Left Behind Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.
John Phillip, the student who was hospitalized during the last few weeks of classes last term, showed up today to submit his project in my mechanics class. It looked like a cat's scratching post, just like the others, except that with this one there was a blade sticking out halfway up one side, and on the top there was a clamp from which the string will be attached and swung. And, for some strange reason, it was also painted silver like the alternative set-up for mechanical energy. The adjustable top is an improvement over the other set-ups submitted, but the non-detachable, non-replacable and non-height-adjustable (height non-adjustable?) blade means it could only be used to compute for a limited range of values for kinetic energy. But for that, and the fact that there was only one set-up submitted instead of four, I could not give him any final grade higher than one-point-zero in my course. I don't even know where he got the idea that submitting one set-up would get him a grade of one-point-five. He says that that's what I told him last time we met last week, but it's not true. Anyway, so he finally passed my subject, and I'll have to complete a change of grade form for him. That's more than I can say for his other subjects though. Today he had two exams from Maila. Since Maila was only teaching Integrated Calculus, Differential Calculus and Analytical Geometry, then it's two of those three subjects, all of which, I think, are required for engineering majors like John Phillip. Now the thing is, it seems he didn't pass his exams again, and Maila will be out of the country starting this afternoon until sometime next week. I don't know how that will be ironed out with his incomplete requirements in her subjects because the last day for changing of grades is May 3, Monday next week, as well as being the first day of enrollment/adjustment. Of course the student doesn't really care that much, because his parents are also split about him staying on studying here or in Cagayan. And according to them, it's his decision, while he's more of a "we'll see." So his parents are going to be taking care of his enrollment there (where he already passed the entrance exam) while he continues with his completing subjects here. Worse comes to worst, I guess we'll see on the first day of classes if he's really staying on or leaving. Another problem of his is that David has not been been around for giving John's lab exam, although he could just as easily ask me to print out the same exam (one of two sets) that we gave them before. Now, I'm not sure about the robotics exam though. Those files David kept in his handheld, unless he sends them to me by e-mail. But then I'm still more than willing to administer the test for him if he just gives the word. I, at least got to give John Phillip points for effort showing up here nigh everyday.
