2004-06-22 8:27 AM Students Assembling Students Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.
Since the Student Organization Membership Drive occurred (or more accurately, started) before my class yesterday, I’ll relate about that first. I passed by the hallway where they were supposed to set up their tables and only the Young Educators’ Society had put up some obviously well prepared cutouts for their backdrop. The letters of their acronym were figures of a guy holding his hands up for the ‘Y”, another guy sitting down holding oversized books over his head for the “E” and so on. My only complaint is the “u” looked like “li”, and one of their classmates teased them for being the “Yoling Edlicators’ Society”. The Dance Troupe had some letters using a permanent marker on halves of seven colors of art paper pasted behind them that could have been done in ten minutes. But there were two invitation posters in front of their low table, which took more time to make. For the Badminton Club there was just a printout of the name on half of a bond paper, which was just a little larger than the original printout reserving their table, although later someone taped a badminton racket behind their area. One group I didn’t know existed until today had two laptops and a computer monitor for their display, but no printout identifying that they were the Digital Arts Club. And they showed animated shorts obviously done abroad and shown regularly on a music channel, besides being inappropriate for a school. The Entrepreneurs’ Guild had a backdrop done pop-up book style, but this wasn’t put up until noon. The same goes for the Paintball Club (a.ka. Extreme Sports Club). I saw their raw materials of different colored cartolinas being delivered before lunch. The simple design of splotches behind their club name looked good and was effective though. Before that though the members present just ripped pages out of their notebooks and made signs in pen all over the place, including the elevator, which is illegal. By the afternoon their display had the members’ sign up sheet attached to the wall with no one manning the booth, and several empty juice cartons and junk food wrappers taped below their display as well. Unfortunately, Tinig did not have any representation because the president was all over the place (having classes among other things) and the vice president was absent, at home with a fever. Their table, despite being the first labeled, was just used for propping the sound system all day. Some org officers were already talking about having a room-to-room campaign today. There was also another meeting with Student Affairs Head Sir Ronnie about the feasibility of Friday’s freshmen-upperclassmen acquaintance party (especially since the EVP rejected making the attendance to the party compulsory or allowed to be the alternative class of teachers for that day), as well as telling them about the elections for the Recognized Student Organizations charter members which will happen within the week as well. Another thing I could say about the drive yesterday was that there was a lot of trash in the area when the day was done, excluding what the Paintball Club did. Maybe the administration will provide more trashcans around the area for today. At least it seems all the clubs can get exposure on all the days of the recruitment period.
