2004-07-05 8:20 AM Drawing the Line When Students As for Reconsiderations Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.
Returning to Dudley from last week, I learned from the Y.E.S. members afterwards that before he approached me that it was after he talked to them about the items in the test that they made him realize what he had forgotten to answer; definitely not allowable to get his paper back then. I asked the guidance counselor about him. All she could tell me was that he did not work well in large classes because the slightest sound or movement would distract him. But at least she agreed that what he was asking from me was wrong, even if she did not seem to be disturbed that he would ask such a thing. And speaking of unrealistic demands, there have been more rumors going around about the latest freshmen-upperclassmen acquaintance party meeting. The student council president was said to have walked out when it became apparent that some female freshmen were asking subtly for all the activities being organized by the upperclassmen (the dating game, the trivia contest) to be scrapped. It also seems the same people who suggested those changes gave their own idea of the party as being “wild”, with the girls going in white shirts with no underwear to be doused. The upperclassmen were outraged that those who spoke up seemed to have forgotten they are in a Catholic institution. It has also come out that some freshmen (according to their batch representatives) are holding back their ideas for next year, when they believe (mistakenly, as the upperclassmen assert) THEY will be the ones in charge of the event. Personally, the way things are going, I would rather that the event be simply cancelled. I could foresee the upperclassmen boycotting the freshmen’s organized events and vice versa. Besides, my take on the “wild party” suggestion is not that they are being irreverent and rude, but they seem to have the intention of giving the planning the same credulity it seems to have in their eyes, which is none. In other news, all the faculty and staff have been divided into four teams for a series of varied sports competitions from this month to December. According to them this is in preparation for the system-wide competition in February, to find out who are the best players we can field in all the proposed events. Our team was met the by captain Info Tech Head and Sys Ad Randy, who admitted being perplexed why he was made one of the captains along with Student Affairs Head Ronnie and two P.E. teachers, one of whom was a pre-school teacher last year. But the teams were manned draft pick style, so Randy must really have chosen early for Randy to have gotten me before Ronnie could grab all the people he knew, which he complained are woefully few. Anyway, I signed up for Badminton (July), Softball (September), Ping-pong (August) and Volleyball (November). October was Basketball, and December was Chess and Darts, not surprisingly all indoor sports. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
