Good Aptitude Must be Accompanied by Right Attitude

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Yesterday's Trigonometry classes were just group exercises on verification. I only gave four problems, but it took the groups more than an hour to finish them. Some, in fact, did not finish.

Deiv, it seems, is the reason why the previous teacher does not erase the board after her class. He was still copying. But at least his classmates reminded him that he should be the one to erase the boards. I think it was also on the request of their previous teacher. But he should finish copying that before the next period begins, because he is holding up the rest of the class.

Dudley also had a new demand today. Before the class started he went to the faculty room to ask if he could attend the afternoon class because there was a meeting for the student publication, with which he is an accepted photographer. I said we're having group exercises (did I decide on that after he informed me? I don't know), and if he was going to miss the exercises, he would have to do them all by himself in the afternoon class.

When I got to the classroom, he said, "Sir, I'm here." And while I went around to check up on their progress he asked me if I knew there was a meeting with the student publication. I said I wasn't aware. I didn't add that this was because there were no posters about it along the hallways.

Besides, I wouldn't have denied him if he were one of my better performing students, which, just to be clear, he isn't.

Although, since he and another classmate in Algebra asked Maila to be transferred from their current class, which they had the insight to realize were the "scholars", that means that they did well in the diagnostic exam and have the potential to excel. They just don't have the motivation. Of course, just like I would have, Maila denied their request.

In a faculty meeting we had Thursday afternoon I had to offer the services of the Young Educators' Society to the aid of some English teachers who said they have a handful of students who really need extra help in just learning to read, write, speak and comprehend things in English.

The Y.E.S. was also suggested to host a number of Inter High School Quiz Contests in the area, probably not only in the staple Math and Science but also Computer Programming and Robotics. Of course this will be with the financial (and probably logistic) help of the administration.

I also described all of the ideas I had for the interactive science display (ballooning from the dean's original list of twelve) and got some responses from and some assignments to the other teachers for design. In particular there is the analemma monthly and hourly "sundial" from the movie "Cast Away", the ant farm, and the animated reflections (which drew the interest of the English teacher heading the poetry reading performers as an alternative to shadow puppets).
