Wanting to Protect the School's Integrity and Reputation

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

One last extracurricular item I remembered before I return to talking about my classes: in a meeting on Tuesday two weeks ago talking about ironing out the distribution of non-classroom events for the rest of the term, one of the items was the possible merging of the students’ proposed Band Fest and the Talent Quest, to minimize the stage preparations.

The problem was that the students suggested that the Band Fest be open to outsiders with at least one of our enrollees as a member, which goes against the purpose of the Talent Quest.

There was an apprehension from the organizers of last year’s Talent Night and last July’s Acquaintance Party that there might not be enough bands playing to warrant the event, as a lot of the student players have been notorious in backing out at the last minute.

Despite the fact that the original suggestion of some of the students was for the school to have its own performing band already, I pointed out that the reason for this altered suggestion was that there are some among the teens who have been known to find any excuse to bring their non-enrolled friends into the campus, such as volunteering to pick up most of the food to the Acquaintance Party just so they would be allowed to let people in who helped the “carry all the load” into the venue.

A compromise was reached in that a registration period and fee would be implemented to concretize the bands’ commitments, with the fee being forfeited if they back out.

Another concern was the appropriateness of the performed material for a Catholic university. So a screening process was also put up, with the bands getting their fee back if all their selections are rejected. Thus we would have some documentation to show the students if we were to cancel the event due to low turnout.

The deadline set for submitting the registration form was Wednesday last week. According to our P.E./music teacher organizer, nine groups already signed up, so they are pushing through with it this Friday.

Another hitch though was that the registration form I made did not get sent to the organizer on time, so all the rules we made about being back stage five minutes before the call time, a limit to their total stage time including tune up, asking for contact numbers and the fee being five hundred pesos (he changed two) were not given to the students.

Of course that’s extra work for the guards and the Discipline officers with all the strangers that are going to be converging on the covered court and the open grounds around it.

So far I have not heard any policies set down for the event about allowing or disallowing those who are not are students who want to go to watch and not to play, and if there will be an entrance fee.

I don’t know if I will be watching. It will depend on whether my cousin is going and I will have a ride home afterwards.

I’ll stop here for now. Class dismissed.
