Mood: Overwhelmed by the Potential Read/Post Comments (0) |
2005-04-22 3:52 PM Practical Applications of Engineering Achievements of the Students Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.
I was talking about the discussion for the potential uses of the geodesic dome that the engineering sophomores made for the very hands on final exam of their Strength of Materials class. I suggested using it as a planetarium, covered up of course with possibly canvas, although we have no idea yet how to attach the material to the inside of the skeleton without punching holes in it, which, of course, would ruin the whole point of the required darkness. If this pushes through also, I’d have to put in the order for the best out of the locally available projectors already. I’ll just buy one instead of two this time. It still costs less than three thousand pesos anyway. If the owner of the surrounding lands agreed for it to be placed in the grassy rotunda in front of the school, she could turn it into a greenhouse. I also kidded the students that with a green screen, that would become their classroom for their Environmental Engineering course next term. One of the proposals was to place it beside the statue of the founder, but the Executive Vice President immediately vetoed the idea considering that he didn’t want it providing a very attention catching temptation for the pre-, grade and high school students to attempt to climb, when it very far from teacher, staff and security guard supervision. Some of the students asked for it as their smoking area, since they will not be allowed to congregate just outside the gate anymore, like they were planning a rally or something when they gather out there silently everyday. The alternative was a patch of land to the side of the property, but still outside the campus. That way they won’t be visible to people (and more importantly parents – as if parents aren’t people) who build very firm first impressions on what they see even before entering the gate. Since it only cost twelve thousand pesos, is completely made from readily available materials and takes only half of a working day to finish (probably less now that they aren’t going to start from a standpoint of total ignorance) the Dean may decide to make more than one even before the next Strength of Materials course offering next school year. Of course next year they may attempt to make a larger one, using longer pipes. The challenge has definitely been laid down for the lower batches, even though they have already surpassed their predecessors in the original robot design department. Now I’ll talk about the first of the three teaching demonstrations that I participated in for new applicants. He was a double degree holder, being a licensed Electronics and Communications Engineer as well as a B.S. Mathematics graduate. But it was the second that he has prolifically taught since he finished his studies. Not that it matters much to me because unlike the last term, I am not given a first batch engineering course to teach for the first term of the next school year. But that’s a digression. I will talk about the significant part about this demo tomorrow, and my tentative schedule for next trimester. For now, class dismissed.
