2005-05-26 6:18 AM Students Apparently Rub Off On Teachers Too Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.
Just two more bits about the two activities last week before I concentrate on current situation. I forgot to mention that during the river trek in the science and outdoor camp, it was ironically the upperclassmen (the old students) that had all the reported “casualties” such as bee stings, a cut on the leg from the rocks, and a guy who fell in the water and got completely submerged from head to foot, despite lagging behind in the early part of the trail so as not to get even his feet soaked. There was also one of the facilitators whose eye got irritated AFTER the hike when he was already getting something from his bag. He had to go to an ophthalmologist to have it washed out completely, and up to this week his eye is still a little red, although it has been pronounced foreign object free. During the school-wide workshop, there was also one outfit (the teachers from the integrated school) that included in their weaknesses and threats the faults of their fellow teachers, even though most that they were talking about were only isolated incidents that, as far as a lot of people believed including the executive vice president, did not reflect on the entire institution. As a response, they said that if such negative traits ever got back to the parents, possibly through the students, it would be bad publicity for the school. At this point, the vice president turned the tables on them and cited one specific example where the gossip did spread because the teachers in the integrated school freely talked about it among themselves EXCEPT when the person involved was around. Somehow there were still people though who insisted that what they did during that situation was justified. Not in our eyes. We college teachers are a relatively carefree and forgiving lot compared to them. We could only imagine what they are probably saying about us and our lack of sensitivity to their supposed sensibilities. I wonder if has something to do with the maturity level of the people they have to deal with in their jobs. Funny, I don’t have any problems dealing with my pre-school teacher friend Henry. It was because of them that the Dean rushed the move of our faculty room from the second floor to the third floor last Saturday. The integrated school faculty were supposed to occupy it from the start of this week, but except for minor fix ups, we couldn’t move yet because the new room wasn’t finished yet. The other faculty members were already prepared that we would be moving when they were there at the start of the week. The Dean didn’t want the integrated school faculty saying anything bad about us though (even though it wasn’t our fault that the preparation was taking time) or on the administration because of their lack of supervision as to the attention to the deadline. It has taken three days, and David visiting from Singapore to fix our wireless internet, but we finally feel like the new office is home. As for our old digs, the last time we visited them yesterday four new small cubicles with no desk areas were added, and the positions were already assigned. Apparently the faculty were also not mature enough to pick spots for themselves, because it was one handwriting on post-its that were in the cubicles. And with that I terminate Session 605. Class dismissed. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
