Other Problems of Working From Scratch

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

In the meeting of my general science requirement mechanics lab class for the tenth week of third term, we had the second to the last experiment.

And here’s where listing all the experiments at the start of the term in order and schedule of which we are going to perform them has some of its drawbacks.

This is because instead of writing the correct experiment for which we have the complete set up, which is the Conservation of Mechanical Energy, I wrote down at the start of the term the other experiment that we don’t have the whole collection of materials for, Conservation of Linear Momentum.

And I didn’t notice until the morning of the experiment. But unlike the last correction I made where I just swapped the experiments around to accommodate the procedure that the students already studied for, this time I couldn’t, because we were never going to perform, Linear Momentum.

So I just gave the students a little more time to study for the quiz on the correct experiment. It was a good thing then that I showed up there a little earlier than usual, which was already ten minutes before the official start of the class.

One of the questions of the quiz was on what they were supposed to change with each trial. I had to give them a clue that it was a phrase, “the blank-blank of the blank”, which was why it was three points. The answer was the initial or starting height of the ball.

I changed the heights given in the book though, which were specific values, and not relative proportions of whatever the height of their ramp was.

One group (not what I described as my A-1 last time though) finished all the trials in less than ten minutes, which was ideal. After all, how long does it really take to roll the ball a total of twelve times down the ramp at different heights?

Again it was only the groups that had only one member at the start or that didn’t read the procedures who took longer with performing the experiment.

Session 1045 also studied the wrong experiment for the quiz. Class dismissed.
