Not As Ready For The "Real World" As The Students Thought They Were

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

I’ll go into some tidbits of news for today, foregoing my discussion of my classes.

First of all, one of the School of Computing students (majoring in Information Management) who started out their practicum in-campus then decided to accept the belated offer of a telecommunications company to be part of their on-the-job training program returned after four days.

She complained about just sitting around a conference table for that duration listening to an old guy drone about what they were supposed to do.

So just like in college, it’s really up to the students whether they accept the supervision of the bosses they have or not. If it’s the latter, they can quit or drop.

Some of the more productive business management students who got accepted into companies who put them to good use though, were also complaining, but this time about the lack of preparation their courses gave them for the corporate life.

For one thing, they did not have enough instruction in spreadsheet and database software, that their “employers” are asking them to complete tasks beyond their knowledge, although more enterprising students would go for the help file or online to finish the tasks.

Second is that they were used to some teachers just accepting and grading their papers or programs when passed on the given deadline.

They were not prepared to be chewed out by their bosses for ineffectual submissions, AND asked to repeat the job until their superior is satisfied.

This goes back to the students waiting until the eleventh hour to perform any task, and accepting any grade that will eventually land them a passing grade in the course, instead of aiming for flawless work and dean’s list.

So the way I see it, it’s partly the professors’ fault, but the students also need to share the blame for their ill preparation.

Session 1133 just passed. Class dismissed.
