Mood: Looking Long Term Read/Post Comments (0) |
2006-06-08 10:10 AM Seeing the Students Get Their Parents' Money's Worth in Classes Paid and Attended Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.
Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. For the first meeting of my first Introduction to Electricity lab class for the third week of the first term, they finished their soldering work on their alligator clip connectors, just as the other class did in the latter part of last week. This is because my orientation class was done to both classes during the first day of the first term, immediately after the lecture class (in fact, even before that period was over). That means that the second class for the week, when we met later that week, is not ahead in the activities, instead of the one that meets earlier in the week. That won't be for long though. There are two holidays coming up in the next two weeks, both on the same day and both running over the same lab class. So I will have to announce to both classes next time I meet them that the first class will either join the second class in their lab sessions for the next two weeks, or we schedule a three to six hour make up session that will take a big chuck out of their schedule, or force them to show up in school on a Saturday. Besides, since there was a power failure that happened in the middle of that class, some students who were still soldering have to attend the later class anyway to finish their work. I have already set the dates for the seven experiments they have to perform for the class, and these all start in the last week of June for simultaneity, with enough time for the practical exam in the end. By that time, the first class in the week will be ahead, which is less confusing to remember, until the end of the term. Just one small anecdote about the class: I have been teaching this class for three years now, and this is the first time that, when I asked for alligator clips, one group actually brought jumper cable leads, that ended up (not being appropriate at all for the experiments, of course) just being used by the guys to tease each other about nipple* twisters, especially since they had watched the movie "Benchwarmers". Session 1157 is on a holiday. Class dismissed. *Probably the first time I've used that word here, in any context. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
