2006-07-27 10:23 AM Meta Academic Concerns Cut Into Class Time Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.
Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. I was talking about the first meeting of my Introduction to Electricity and Magnetism lecture class for the tenth week of the first term. After the examples, I gave them a circuit that one of the transferee students suggested (who had taken up the topic before), that of a diagram shaped like a layered cake. Once more this is solved as a group. In the first meeting of the previous subject's accompanying lab class for the week, we had their fifth experiment which deals with the loop and the node rules of circuit analysis. This time I came up with a circuit with labels on certain points for their quiz, from which they were supposed to identify the currents, the nodes and the loops. Now, after the quiz, a lot of the students went for academic advising that was originally scheduled for 8am that day, when they had no classes – and apparently they also weren't in school yet. So it cut very much into the lab time, when I had to leave the students alone to make the circuit and measure the voltages, resistances and currents while dealing with their batch mates' subjects for the next term. It really was bad timing, otherwise the groups would have been able to finish their experiment, including the need to compute for the three unknown currents in three variables using the system of equations they learned in their Mathematical Methods One class, during the first half of the period. It was a very taxing session for me. I'm just assured all the group members will learn about the rules in detail when we take them up in their lecture class in the next few days. In the meeting of my Engineering Drawing and Design class for the week , I gave them four exercises to make, including as assignments. First they had to come up with their idea of what the Engineering Building of the school should look like. Then they were to download and install this free version of a 3D design software and recreate their last three exercises there. That will probably keep them busy until two weeks from now. Session 1229 went for advising first when the experiment should have been priority. Class dismissed. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
