2006-08-01 11:03 AM Students Asking For An Arm When Being Spoonfed Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.
Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. In the first meeting of my Engineering Materials Science class for the eleventh week of the first term (four weeks to go!), I gave them nine review problems on the three chapters that are part of the coverage of the exam, and at the same time we had their academic advising since the original schedule (just like last year, curious enough) was preempted by the foundation day celebrations. That means three questions per chapter that I wrote on the chalkboard. I also tried to answer some of the students questions sarcastically, such as for when the problems were, and I answered “this afternoon”. Deiv, not surprisingly though, took it seriously and immediately raised his hand and asked if the test was going to be that afternoon. Out of the entire class, he was also the only person to come up to me several times to ask about one of the problems – the first one, in fact. When one of the other students came up to me declaring that the atomic weight and density of aluminum were required to find the number of atoms per cubic meter, he tried to do the same for the next problem, but I shot him down, going up to the board and showing him that the densities of gold and silver were already given - so much for paying attention more than he’s been during the lectures. In the end I just told them to pass the answers (solved by pair) later in the day, since no one had finished by the time the period was over. As for the academic advising of the computer engineering students, they can’t take Interfacing Computer Systems yet because Data Structures and Algorithms is a prerequisite. Asking the dean about this, she resorted to not offering INTCOSY yet, and replacing it with DASTRAL. Now even the ECE students who have been advised to take INTCOSY will have to adjust their pre-enrollment. Session 1237 didn’t read. Class dismissed.
