2006-08-12 1:47 PM The Limit of When the Teacher Has to Do Something About The Students Not Studying Enough - Or At All Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.
Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. During the three-hour make up session of my Introduction to Electricity and Magnetism lecture class, which we spent on their fourth exam, the time element finally got to me that even though I only gave four questions that they were supposed to answer, there were still students coming up to me after the third hour had started asking if such and such a configuration was series or parallel or could be identified as a node or labeled as an individual current or loop. There were very basic questions they were asking me, and I said to the class that the only thing I could conclude from their questions is that they didn't practice solving any problems or in other words didn't study. I don't know if this is a natural consequence of the fact that I give the formulas. Maybe it's because I haven't emphasized enough that their post-requisite subjects will all be about circuit analysis, and that they would have a difficult time there (including not being able to take up five subjects in the third term if they fail Electrical Circuits One next term) if they don't learn the fundamental concepts in my class. I said I was sorry, but I will have to include Series, Parallel and Node and Loop Circuits in the finals again. I also wrote down several problem numbers from the book that I expected them to study for the oral exam in the laboratory next week, which will be reflected both in their lecture and lab grade. Since there is only one grade for both now, that means it has twice the amount of credit it had before. What's also weird is that during the classroom exercises, they don't ask questions. They probably just copy from their classmates, but the exercises are my indicators of their comprehension, and not just for scores. So if their exercises are perfect (or perfectly duplicated) I assume they understand the lesson. Maybe that wasn't clear to them too, about the consequences of their actions such as cheating, since in the end, literally, they are only cheating themselves. Session 1257 didn't solve the exercise. Class dismissed. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
