Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. In the first meeting of my Engineering Drawing and Design class for the thirteenth week of the firs term, the students continued completing their remaining exercises, all of which are due at the end of the week. Some of the students were asking whether they should put a roof on their houses and building made with the free 3-D software we're using. I said it doesn't matter; whichever highlights their work better when viewed. The same is true with placing appliances in their rendition of their home and dream house. Some of the students really got into the knack of creating very recognizable objects in their house, such as computer consoles and stereo systems. In the second session of my Engineering Materials Science class for the week, I finished with the chapter on failure. Not surprisingly, Deiv started copying what I was writing on the board, and even asked such obvious questions such as what was the vertical line above a radical sign, clearly a leftover from what the previous teacher was written on the board. The best remedy of his malady, I have realized, is not to write everything on the board, but to write concepts that seem whole (so he wouldn't ask for clarification), and only add important items while I'm talking. From the corner of my eye I saw that he did stop writing while I was discussing, although he was visibly fidgeting, like he couldn't sustain his attention on what I was saying, even the parts I talked about that was not on the board. And when I did finish, I couldn't continue with writing yet because he still had not copied the right side of the board. Still not wanting for the whole class to wait for him while he copied, I started dictating the next sample problem. In the middle of this (which he couldn't follow at the same time as finish copying what was on the board naturally) he interrupted me to say I could write on the part he was finished with. Like I would listen to him anymore. I just stopped and asked someone to get the attendance, and left the room. Session 1265 will not hinder the class anymore. Class dismissed.
