Proper Avenues for Dialogue

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Some comments about the most recent issue of the college student publication that I had decided to confer with the other teacher firsts if they agreed that it should be brought to the attention of the editorial staff for consideration in the future.

First, the otherall theme of the paper seems to be - although I doubt it was intentional, at least the first part - is that student achievements rock and that the administration is woefully lacking in a lot of their supposed services to the students.

Talk about biting the hand that feeds it, or to be more specific, that hand that gives it money to air all their views.

According to the faculty adviser of the editorial staff, most if not all of the articles presented in the paper were the result of their most recent workshop to boost the quality of their writings.

It may be grammatically impeccable - I haven't read everything to check - but they could have practiced more in choosing their subject matters. A bias, even if accidental, was shown.

They seemed to have first and foremost the approval of their peers in mind, which is why several of the articles were aimed towards describing how successful the Communication Arts Week fashion show was, or another CA student's amateur film.

So there's also the small concept of "balance" that has to be addressed.

Sure you can complain about the cafeteria or the lack of tissue paper in the restrooms, but did you try to get the point of view of the concessionaire or the administration about budget concerns?

The humorous horoscopes printed in white along the dark margins of the paper were also a bit distracting. What happened to having one neat section devoted to comics and jokes?

I have yet to get some of the reactions from the administration about this. I'm sure there are some things about what has been written that don't make them happy with the assumptions.

Session 1417 abused the freedom of the press. Class dismissed.
