Scenes Behind the Stage

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Some topics that have to be discussed far from the gossiping students' ears: it's funny that according to the musical "Chicago", it's only in show business that it's no problem if two performers working together don't like each other. Maybe I'm just not numbed enough as a performer (as far as teaching in front of a captive audience, making them believe I know what I'm talking about, can be considered performing) but I don't believe this is true.

Take, for instance, the all-female college dance group that performed last Saturday in the inter-school competition. I know for a fact that they have internal squabbles, not the least of which comes from the fact that their choreographer (who is not a student of the school) courted and became an item with one of the dancers in the middle of their practices.

This dancer has two things going against her: first, she just broke up with her student boyfriend the month before, and second, even though her fellow dancers and some of the teachers who have watched the dance know that she is not one of the most confident swingers, she is still positioned in front of the group (and usually in the middle) for most of their number.

Add to that the fact that even though the choreographer has verbally told the group from the start that he will not be charging, within the last three days before the competition, he announces that he will be charging fifteen thousand pesos, which according to him is already half his usual asking price.

From what his new girlfriend says, this is supposed to be tuition money, indicating that he himself isn't finished with his schooling yet, and that this "purpose" is supposed to appeal to our laying importance on education to give him the money.

And based on what one of the professional observers have said (who has appeared on television shows several times) even the most well-known and best in the business charge only five thousand pesos for educational institutions, standard rate.

We're not going to give him the money, although the students have already set aside around two thousand pesos from their own pockets to give him as a token of gratitude. Whether he wants to make a big deal about it if he feels "short-changed" is up to him.

Session 1423 wants an internal choreographer, who has loyalty to the school. Class dismissed.
