Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. The directors, dean and executive vice president during their most recent meeting had arrived at a decision on how the faculty members can settle the issue on who should occupy the cubicles that will be vacated by the teachers moving to the new one beside the engineering laboratories very soon. No seniority of entry in the school will be honored: the teachers wanting to move have to talk about it among themselves and reach an agreement who has the best claim. I’m sure that the very optimistic director of the school of business and entrepreneurship has something to do with this ignoring of the hierarchy in favor of open dialogue. The executive vice president probably reiterated his stand on why he is not allowing large honorariums for overloads: that there were some senior faculty members from the state university he had come from who always told the department head to give them a lot of overload so they could get more money. In all my years of teaching though, that has never been abused: as long as the faculty members have the perspective that being given overload is not a privilege or a regular occurrence, but a special case when there is a lack of teachers. Anyway, the EVP probably stated his fear again of not wanting there to be any prima donnas among the faculty because of rank, achievements or seniority. There will still have to be a procedure to it, because if not everyone who wants to move cubicles is informed about the possibility they could occupy it, there will be grudges held again when someone finally does take a seat in them. In other news, during the most recent session of my feedback and control systems laboratory, there was finally one copy of the required software in each of the computers the junior students could use in the engineering lab room. There was at least one group though who complained about certain parts of the procedure taking a little too long to perform, so I just told them that they didn’t have to finish it on that meeting. Of course, if that backs up too much (or backfires) by the end of the term, they will be responsible for catching up, because I will still grade them based on what most were able to accomplish. Folders for group data reports are still best to use for these classes. Session 1505 believes in having just as much right to privileges enjoyed by older employees. Class dismissed.
