2007-03-23 9:56 AM Extracurricular Events Interrupting Regular Classes Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.
Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. In my most recent general science requirement mechanics lecture class, as promised I gave them examples on the use of the equation for conservation of mechanical energy on non-linear surface movement (this time on the curved sides of a bowl) and for pendulums, where their height becomes related to their velocity, even on the upswing. The same is true for something frictionless sliding back up the side of a bowl after sliding down the opposite side. Unfortunately, I couldn’t give them more than just a couple of examples, because there was a seminar sponsored by the Engineering Student Assembly for Engineering Week that was starting during the last one third of our class. What’s funny is that the senior student in charge of the event requested for the attendance in the seminar of just the engineering majors, when in that class his younger brother was enrolled, and was a computer science major. In the end I just allowed everyone to go to the seminar, as long as they signed in the registration sheet. Now I have another story about Ephraim. The guidance counselor showed up to ask to meet with him during my class, to talk about his low grades and that if they did not improve, his possibly becoming ineligible to study here anymore. Showing just how much he values his education, he showed up when we were already finished with the exercise. And he still wanted to take the exercise! It’s not my fault that for once we finished before his requisite latter half of the period appearance. I’m also not obliged to give him the exercise that he missed when he didn’t catch any of the lecture that preceded it. Besides, he’s just going to copy from his classmates again, thus skewing my perception of the class’ ability to answer the same level of difficulty of questions in the succeeding exam. I told him to just attend the seminar, but he still asked me about the exercise. Just like with a certain student, I passed him off to asking his classmates about the question. Not that he showed up anyway afterwards with the answer. It probably wasn’t worth the effort. Session 1569 is still desperately hoping to pass the course on minimum effort. Class dismissed.
