Distorted Ideas About Team Tasks

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

In my two continuous three hour lab classes for the week, for which only a handful of students (the engineering fourth year regulars) are added for the second one) I gave them their first project for the term, which will be what I had planned for the engineering week exhibit last school year, but will now be for the foundation day.

I allowed them several exhibits per group, since we only have four tables to a room, or eight tables for both of the labs to be used.

Besides the ones that I listed down, I also told the students they could suggest their own.

The deadline I gave them is the meeting after that, when they've checked the list.

There were also two students that I told the entire class had to make up the experiment, because after one hour had passed, they still had not yet arrived. As an advantage to one of them though, who will be passing the individual report, he already has the advantage of seeing how his classmates had done the experiment (at least the latter part), so all he really has to do is verify their results, and his deadline for submission is now a week after he performs the experiment.

This, by the way, was in Advanced Electronics Lab, where we had the second experiment on the uses of operational amplifiers.

In the second one, which is Energy Conversion Lab, I gave them two sets of procedures for sequential experiments because the next one is all computation using only the data measured and recorded from the previous experiment. Now, I gave them an hour to finish that, but they took the whole period.

I guess there are some students in groupwork who basically just shut down when they know that their classmates can perform all the calculations.

Besides, even though I said all the groups are to perform it spearately, since two groups shared the same data, why not solve together?

Maybe, in retrospect, I should have allowed them to split into groups one of which will calculate and the other which will perform the next experiment, although that places more of a burden on them.

Session 1677 would not step up if someone else can do the work. Class dismissed.
