2007-06-23 2:37 PM Students That Don't Have A Sense of Urgency Unless the Teacher Shouts? Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.
Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. For my Computer Circuit Fundamentals class, I told the students that for the first part of the session, they were required to present the flowchart of their current exercise, which has taken them abnormally long to finish (three meetings). This was all I could think of at the moment to force them to be able to move on and proceed to the next topic, which is thirty two bit operations. Only one of the groups complied though, and it was the one whose program was almost finished instead of the ones who still had the big hurdle of the primary task they had to get over. And for them, all I had to clarify with their flowchart was a duplicate command that they were using for their extended division routine (or separation of the tens digit from the ones digit). This is because I haven't taught them division yet, which is also part of the next lesson, since I want them to learn the difficult parts first before showing them the shortcuts, for them to better appreciate the given commands and details. Two of the groups asked at the end of the class if they still had to submit their flowcharts, but I said it was supposed to have been at the start, so they lost their bonus points for that. Maybe I'll make this into a requirement for each program at the start next time. I gave them their next exercise, which is two-digit multiplication, and at the same time already introduced how to make pre-defined variables. I was only somewhat surprised when one student told me he could not understand what I wrote on the board as to the procedure. I could give complete sample programs, but that would mean I will have to give more complicated tasks to require them to make. Session 1681 doesn't know and complains when they have it easy until the teacher gives something more difficult. Class dismissed. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
