Mood: Don't Know What Time of Exam to Give Them Read/Post Comments (0) |
2007-07-16 3:52 PM Give The Students The Formulas During An Exam, But Expect More Analysis From Them Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.
Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. Had the Energy Conversion lecture class second exam for today. They had the formula sheet photocopied and everything, but done by two different people with repetitions on two sides of the same paper. It still wasn't as extensive as I would have liked, with still some confusion (I bet) on the side of the students as to when to use which, especially the special conditions when Q is greater than or equal to 10. And since some of the students were also double checking their computations by using two or more of the redundant formulas, there were also those approaching me asking if such an amount of discrepancy between their answers could be considered alright. They were fine with most of the initial problems were there was only a case of direct substitution, but when it came to some derivation where it would take three or more computations (using the equations in their formula sheet) to arrive at the final answer, that was where they started to falter. They even insinuated that maybe I had neglected to add a needed given value. At the same time, there was also a student there from one of the Filipino classes, for which they had an upcoming report about cheating in the school. He observed how the students behaved (and maybe even the teacher) and left after sitting among the test-takers for about an hour. There were even students at the time who were joking about wanting to give him something to write about. If the report is about the attitude of the students, it would reflect that at the start (or even at every opportunity) the students would react noisily. But after a while, they would settle down and take their work seriously. But even with their talkativeness, it's in their analysis that they will be graded the most, which, if they have an answer which is exactly like their seat mate, it will be very suspect. Session 1717 again didn't study for the exam just because the formulas are given. Class dismissed. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
