The Lack of Good Safeguards Revealed

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

I found out yesterday that Ephraim, even though he has not passed introduction to mechanics yet (having failed as my student twice) is now taking up intermediate mechanics with the regular sophomores.

For the record, he is an irregular third year student, one of two taking the same subjects now as the second years, in other words: one full academic year behind his original batch mates in year of entry.

I haven't seen his academic folder yet, but I suspect this to be because he did not go for advising after the course card distribution last term.

So it would have been easy for him to fool the registrar's office into thinking that he had passed all his subjects the term before.

Will there be another measure of security now to prevent this from recurring?

Students, after all, should really be forced to show all their course cards to their adviser before they can enroll for the new term.

And, besides that, there really should be an electronic safeguard telling the students and the registrar's personnel what courses the students may not take yet due to failures or lack of prerequisites.

Thge guidance counselor also really ought to tell the student that unless he changes his attitude, he will not be able to finish the engineering course that he persists in staying in.

@@ There was a loss of a laptop in a student's car last Saturday which may have been during the concert. The car was parked in the dormitory, just a short walking distance from the restrooms used for the concert and the covered courts.

There were a lot of outsiders there, and not enough personnel to rove throughout the whole grounds the people were not forbidden to go to.

It was only a small blessing that the building itself was locked down.

But we're not sure yet if it was during the concert that it was taken.

The student himself admitted that it was 24 hours since he last saw his laptop.

Session 1745 doesn't want to be quick to blame strangers for malice . Class dismissed.
