People Being Used Over Machines

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

The way enrollment is structured now, on the first day freshmen enlist, next day the sophomores, then the juniors and so on.

This is because in the past, when all the year levels were allowed to enroll anytime, it was found out that the first year (or lower level students) got closed out of subjects that are regularly offered for them.

In other words, even though they still have no failures and should be automatically enrolled in the subjects they are supposed to take for that term in their flowchart, they can't due to the classes being full.

The problem has not been fully addressed though, because now, when it's the upperclassmen's turn to have a general education floating minor subject, they find out that they themselves have been closed out by all the lower years who are irregular.

I thought this had already been fixed by class padding, in other words, placing a dummy number in the computerized count of each class for the benefit of the students who are set to take it.

I guess it doesn't work though, after all, academic advising is still on paper.

If it were online, then the computer would have a record of who are supposed to take a certain subject for the next term, and reserve a slot for them, especially if it's a regular offering.

This would also be helpful in finding out if certain offerings will have no enrollees, or if additional sections have to be opened.

The same goes for subjects that were offered at the time of first advising but due to constraints on teachers or facilities have to be replaced with something else. Then those who were advised the previous class will be automatically put in the new class, instead of having to post announcements.

But I guess that's still in the future, and we will all still have to struggle with manual adjustments. Computers are so complicated anyway.

Session 1799 is doing the work that could have been handled by one tenth of one computer. Class dismissed.
