2007-12-20 1:50 PM More Rewards for Early Students Sought Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.
Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. With the question of the dean earlier as to whether we should continue with the advising today considering it was already 10am and there were no students, I told him that from experience the students show up in the afternoon. Then, maybe next time, we could just offer it in the afternoon when the efficiency of the advisers would me maximized. If that's the case though, there is the possibility that the students would all show up an hour before the advising and enlistment closes for the day. More than the diligent students should be influencing the slacker students into showing up early for their classes, it is usually the other way around because the slackers goals are so much lower than the good students. The good students are after higher grades. The "bad" students just want to pass, and with the least effort as possible. So if the good students see that the "bad" students are achieving their aims anyway and yet have more time for playing around, then it is the good students who, even on their worst days, know they can come out with twice the output of the "bad" students on their best days, and still pass - just pass. Well there are some examples of being able to make the "bad" students put more effort. One of these is my robotics class where the students who are there at the start of the period are exempted from the quiz at the end of the period. Now, since I don't even advertise this to the late students, they were able to find this out from seeing some of their classmates not working while the they were answering. And, without provocation or ceremony, after a few meetings they started showing up early themselves, even making bets among themselves who would be first. Well, whatever incentive they need for themselves to get the bonuses. I could do something like that for the classes, but what about for things like enrollment, enlistment, assessment and payment (which I only found out about the difference for the registrar's office today)? There is the possibility of making advising automatic enrollment if there are no failures, or even partial if there is only one failure. Session 1955 has no reason to want to finish with a task ahead of most of the student population. Class dismissed. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
