2008-03-28 9:20 AM Academic/Personal: Recognition and Achievement without Pain Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.
Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. I have another anecdote about the same students I talked about yesterday in Digital Design, and in the student accessible version today about their practical exam in the lab, this time for Assembly Language class. At the start of the term I already hammered out with them the schedule of all the exams for the term, every three weeks, so that if there is a conflict with any other subject, it's that teacher that they would have to say has to adjust due to "first come, first served" rule. But during our last meeting, when as a courtesy I reminded them about the schedule, these CS students asked me to postpone it because they had so much work to accomplish at the same time in their other subjects, such as programs they had to finish at the last minute. And when I asked them about the trade off, what we were going to do for the session when they were supposed to have the exam (would I have an additional topic that will now be part of the coverage?) they also asked that no additional material be included. Great. Why don't I just give them their course cards right there and then with passing grades (or should have done so at the start of the term and save them the attendance), since they want to put out no effort anyway whatsoever in exchange for that? But of course I couldn't do that. I'll just sneakily add the new topics to the "review" of old topics they suggested instead. For next term though, I won't schedule any more exams for the twelfth week. Exams will only be on the third, seventh and eleventh week, also so that there will be more time to discuss additional material for the finals, and to shorten the coverage for their first exam. That way, twelfth and thirteenth week will be all lectures for finals coverage (easy relative to their other classes which will be cramming last requirements) and computation of pre-final grades. Session 2089 want all of the benefits without any of the hard work. Class dismissed. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
