2008-06-11 12:53 PM A/P: Tiny Steps Before Fully Computerized Enrollment Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.
Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. Yesterday we had the meeting for the academic advisers in preparation for informing the students of the new policies during the general college assembly to be held (but not yet fully publicized) next week. First problem: students who do not go on the designated time of academic advising. Second: students who do not enlist the courses approved by their adviser, and going beyond the maximum number of units (which is not checked by the computer system) but instead also enlist their alternatives, bloating the student count of each section and preventing some legitimate potential enrollees from registering. Third: perennial late enrollees who wait until the third or fourth week of classes before paying tuition, thus skipping the tedious step of having to add and drop classes whose teachers they do not like. One solution was to (just like what was tried two terms ago) give the academic advisers specific times in the computer lab where the students can advise and enlist at the same time. Since this is a special time that the advisers and the computer labs are both free, the students have to abide by this schedule, otherwise, they will have to wait when the advisers and the labs are free after course card distribution. Of course there were advisers who still opposed this idea, not attracted to the being in one place just to be at the service of the students. The phrase "other things to do" was actually uttered. So much (using a word I brought up in the student accessible version post for today) for dedication to making things easier for the students. As if those who complained will even be present if they were called for such duty after the course card distribution, which they believe is their rightful vacation time already (despite being paid even during the summer and breaks) like slacker co-teacher. Now if there were only consequences to advisers not following this procedure if the students also have penalties. Session 2207 are just looking for temporary solutions to consequences of a problem whose bigger simpler remedy is disregarded. Class dismissed.
