Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on. We had a discipline board meeting today. The first part of the meeting was to discuss the new policies. There are two faculty representatives to the board, one of whom is the discipline board secretary. The other one did not attend the meeting earlier though, even though she was my first choice for the discipline officer position. I would have liked to iron out two things about the school jurisdiction of giving sanctions to a student. It was said that only violations made in campus are considered, or if it damages the reputation of the school. I gave two instances in the grade school where it was specified that any vehicle going to and from any school related activity off campus is considered as an extension of the school campus. Also, that if the student is at an outside function representing the school, then any actions he or she makes that are against the guidelines of the student handbook at that function can be carried out. As part of the sanctions, besides the apology letter, there is no more mandatory guidance counseling but there is a probation period of either one year or until graduation. To this we added one term, and I think this is where the required regular visits to the guidance counselors come in. How frequent do they have to be? Well, that is something we have to decide in the next meeting. We will also be only deciding on the different sanctions for each offense (from probation to expulsion) as the cases arrive. There are also two hearings that we have to have. One is for a frequent dress code violator, who will be the first one. The students may not be taking the violations seriously, but now, there is a minimum five day suspension for her case. Since there were two warnings given before she was given a minor offense, that means she violated the policy at least five times, including after having talked to the discipline officer and the dean, and given promissory notes as to a change in her behavior each time, which was never followed. The second one is for two students watching a pornographic video from a mobile phone in the student center. For this one we will only have two separate sanctions if one of them admits that he just made the other watch, which is what the second guy and his older sister keeps claiming to the discipline officer. Otherwise, they will have the same five day suspension as punishment after the hearing. Despite the fact that it went smoother than I thought it would (except for finding out that the student council president does not know now to pray as she made it all about her hopes for today, her birthday), I wish there was still a different administrative representative for this board because I am still of the faculty mindset. Session 2789 does not feel it is the new term tomorrow. Class dismissed. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
