Man On A Hill

Student "edition" found at {thoughts dot com slash typed no space out no space loud slash blog}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

So I watched a movie last night. I will not say anymore what the title of the film is, because I already mentioned in it the student accessible version. Besides, this is my alternative way of posting spoilers, by not even giving the flick being spoiled, somewhat.

On a side note, I was planning to write this in that other blog, albeit a few days down the line, but then I realized that means there is a big blank space for the entry here today.

Maybe when you get to the end you will agree why I would rather not subject the students to this, for now.

There are those who say that Hollywood provides popcorn entertainment. The compound word feel-good is bandied.

Otherwise there are times when we know we are in for an unhappy ending, such as a depiction of the Alamo, or the Titanic, or the plane that crashed into the Towers.

But even then, the writers take some liberty in giving at least a glimmer of hope in the midst of all that depression.

Sometimes though, it just takes you for a ride. You are in the midst of a fun little tale, full of laughs, and you wonder how the writer is going to wrap it all up in a neat little happy bundle in the end.

The kicker is: it does not. You would think after all of the effort the protagonist went through to get the object of his quest, that it would be a satisfactory victory, but not always.

What is interesting to me is that most of the time, these are packaged as comedies.

Sure there are dramas where someone dies, either expectedly or unexpectedly near the end, but at least there is already a foreshadowing of the tragedy either from the title or in all the anguish the characters go through before that final blow occurs.

But it is those laugh-a-minute movies with their great funny actors that throw you to the left field.

And I guess it is a commentary on life from the people in Wonderland who have had their share of bad days.

Sometimes the Hollywood machine shows us that life is not always about getting what you want, or even what you worked very hard for, no matter what crazy things you did.

So what are you supposed to do? Lie down and die? Of course not, that glimmer of hope comes back in when the closing scenes of the movie show the person moving on.

In some movies this would just be the end of the second act or the penultimate scene then show an up turn as it winds down, but otherwise, there are those that show that is all there is, sadness.

Session 2975 is still waiting for that final scene. Class dismissed.
