2005-06-26 8:58 PM Books and Berkeley Previous Entry :: Next Entry Mood: Happy Read/Post Comments (0) So, yesterday, I slept in egregiously late, as a result of having stayed up egregiously late the night before finishing Anne Perry's The Silent Cry. (The book was really good. I think I'm now going to take a break from Anne Perry for a while, because though I'm really enjoying the books, the sheer Victorianness of it all begins to get to one after a while.)
Daniel and I drove up to Berkeley, and had a late lunch w/Diana, and got caught up on miscellaneous gossip. Then we went over to Berkeley Hats and got Daniel a couple of hats. I tried on a bunch of hats as well, but didn't find anything that I really wanted. I was kind of tempted by one made by Barmah hats, very similar to the black suede one I already own, but in a dark forest green kangaroo hide. Alas, kangaroo hide is rather more expensive than cowhide, and I didn't really feel like paying the extra price. Maybe some other time, when I'm feeling flush. Then we went to Cody's Books, where I acquired a cookbook, and a quartet of cute little notepads bearing cartoon images of the Beatles from Yellow Submarine. Cannot resists cute notepads. Cannot resist anything related to Yellow Submarine. We wandered around downtown for a while, and visited some of our old haunts. I had a blackberry Italian soda at Berkeley Espresso. We went to Comic Relief, and Daniel picked up a bunch of manga. After dinner, we returned to my car to discover that someone had left an index card with "TOO FAR FROM CURB?" on my parked car. Upon reflection, it was a bit far from the curb - not far enough out to really inconvenience anyone, not far enough to actually be outside the painted borders of the parking spot, and not far enough to incur the wrath of Berkeley's fantastically vigilant parking enforcement, but far enough for someone to take the trouble to leave a note. That's Berkeley for ya. Today, we'd had vague plans to go shopping for lamps, but Daniel woke up with a bad cold, so it's been a quiet puttering around the house kind of day. I went grocery shopping. I started reading Freakonomics, which is very fun, although I could do without the occasional asides about those regular boring economists who do lots of math. (My father-in-law is one of those regular economists who do lots of math, you see, so this touches upon a point of family honor.) I love the story about how Superman actually really helped destory the Klu Klux Klan, though. I'll save that for another post, though.
