Some of you may recall my briefly lamenting on this blog about the departure of my manager back in early September. Well, she was lured away to head the tech pubs department of a rapidly growing software company in Palo Alto. They're so rapidly growing that they needed to hire a bunch of tech writers. So, a couple of weeks ago, I got an e-mail from my manager saying, "So, can I persuade you to come over and visit?" A visit led to some interviews; the interviews led to an offer; and after some thought, I accepted the offer. It still feels kind of weird. I wasn't terribly unhappy where I am at "Hot Stuff", though the job has had perhaps more than its fair share of frustrations lately. But I'm excited about the new place (Daniel has dubbed it "Geekville", so let's go with that for now) - they've got cool products, I'll be working for a manager who I know kicks ass, and I think it'll be really good for me in a professional development sense. The extra money Geekville is offering doesn't hurt either. But, man, changing jobs, even in the happiest and most voluntary of circumstances, is stressful. It's hard to disrupt such a major part of one's life. The weirdest bit by far, though, was going in to give notice to my acting manager (a fantastic tech writer who has done a valiant job of producing all her documentation *and* running the department since my manager left), and learning that she had also accepted a job offer from Geekville. On the one hand, I'm thrilled - I'm going to get to keep her as a colleague. On the other hand, it's a double-whammy for tech pubs at Hot Stuff. So, the next couple of weeks are going to be really interesting. I've got a nice little pile of projects to tie up at Hot Stuff. And then I'll be off on a whole new employment adventure.
