Spring Break is here and I am going back to Vegas for the week. I will get to see my friends Karen Lumos and Deborah Kohen read within the course of a week. Maybe I can throw some word down at the Espresso Roma. So, anyhow, I thought I'd take issue with William Carlos Williams' expression "No Ideas But In Things" co-opted from "Paterson" to be used by tons of academic poets. I think he probably meant to include persons and places in that as well. Ideas, or thoughts of the mind are more inclusive than just objects. I'd say the worse sin a poet can do is be boring. The problem with that criteria is that everybody is different. I am pretty easily bored. Maybe I am as guilty of creating my own box to work out of as other poets are in suscribing to someone else's box. My favorite poets are Tim Seibles, Russell Edson, Bill Knott, Denise Duhamel, Jeffrey McDaniel, Ellen Maybe, Taylor Mali, and Hal Sirowicz. I am pretty much moved by the outrageous, the sarcastic, and mainly self effacing humor. I like to find a humor that is uplifting rather than at someone's expense.
Well, I am about to go out and have a beer or two with my fellow Graddies. I am looking forward to the next slam here that I can partake in later this month. I am still waiting on four responses from the MFAs and I am waiting to find out whether I will make the Flagstaff Slam Team or not. Nail Biting, no, but metaphorically, yes.
