Bookfest pt 1

Well it has been a busy 32 hours. Last night I caught Allen Woodman's reading. He was very funny. His sense of humor is very much Woody Allenish. Almost an anagram of his name. He read a short story in the second person and it was very good. I am not good at remembering details, but I had to take off during Ron Carlson's reading to go down to Sedona for the All Star Slam. I picked up Josh and Chris and we went on down. We got there an hour early, but Sedona is a very nice place so we hung outside the theatre. Had some coffee. I don't remember everyone's name but among the 14 who slammed it included me, Mack Dennis, Dan Seaman, Nick Fox, Lucy Anderton, Ira Murfin, Jessica Xxxx, Brandy Lintecum, Jim McKay, Josh Fleming, Christopher Fox Graham, Barbara Sassoone, and Cleoapache. I made it to the second round and placed 7th out of 14. Josh came in first winning 200$, Chris came in second winning 100$ and Lucy came in 3rd winning 50$. The rest of us got 20$. Chris Lane who hosted challenged Josh to a one round bout and Lane came out on top with a beautiful piece about Sept 11th. Sedona had a great audience. About 130 people who paid 10$ each! Amazing. 10 $ for a slam!!!!
Chris, Josh and I went back and had a bite at Denny's before crashing in at 1am. Today, I had to get up at 9:30 with very little sleep. Got the PA system for the bookfest open mike, and then got to the venue and it was closed. My co-host, the wonderful Chloe Leisure and I were concerned about whether the venue didn't know about the event. But everything turned out cool, and about 8 people showed up of which 6 read. Mack Dennis joined us and graced us with his words. Then in the afternoon over at the Alley Nightclub I got to see Locals James Jay and Portun Cochise and they were both very good. Then came the Bookfest Slam and it included Nick Fox Hosting, Mack featuring , Lucy keeping time and calibrating and 13 poets including Brandy and Jim McKay and Cleapache and Ben Jacobsen cleared us for the second round. We had to cut to five for the second round since we were short on time but I came in first and Jim and Brandy came in second and third. It was an honor to place ahead of Brandy since she is AWESOME, and Jim was damn good too! This is my fourth slam I have won outright since being here. I placed 2nd or 3rd about 10 or 12 times. But I
have won four slams since late September and have had a pretty good batting average lately. Let's hope I can keep it up for the finals on May 1st. So after the slam I went and had a ginger ale with Nick and Lucy and Mack and Airek Dye and Suzy Lafollette. Suzy is damn awesome too! Then I went to the Ardrey Auditorium to hear Ester Beline, Judith Ortiz Cofer and TC Boyle. My favorite Ester Poem was her last one from her Ruby series. Judith read a funny essay about her mother which is on THe Language of Life. TC read a short story. He had a bit of a swagger, but he's a damn good writer. He knows it too. no humility.
Great day overall. Tomorrow brings more surprises!
