Paper #1- Rhetoric and Gender: The War of the Sexes

3-5 pages 12 font, 1 inch margins. Typed/computer-- Times or Helvetica or similar standard type.

Choose one of the 15 questions to answer under the heading Writing Assignments
Pages 366, 381, 401 Choose carefully, and then respond to the question. Make sure that you include the question on a cover page with your name on it. From the question you should form a thesis which you set out to prove. Make sure you quote three times and paraphrase 3 times your source(s).
(See Prentice Hall Grammar Manual.) You will need to argue a position. Each assignment question demands in someway an argument on your part.

Evaluation: Rather than use a point system, I grade wholistically. However these important details should be considered in the process of drafting and in looking over your results

*Punctuation: Appropriate puctuation

*Spelling- Typographical and common

*Word Choice- Are you using the correct and appropriate language?

*Paragraph developent-- Paragraphs cohesive and on topic and are there effective transitions between paragraphs? Are paragraphs too long? too short?

*Sentence Structure and Variety: how does the language flow, grammar and vocabulary wise. Are there effective transitions used in the longer sentences? Are sentences choppy, run ons? Splices?

*Content- validity of your arguments, clarification and comprehension of ideas.

*Fulfillment of assignment- Does it answer the question?

*Organization-- Does it have a thesis? Does the paper maintain focus? Does it have a clear introduction, body and conclusion? Is the Conclusion or Introduction too brief?

*Format/ neatness- Does it meet Length, requirements, readable? Pages numbered? Stapled?

*Citation of sources- Does it give proper MLA credit to borrowed ideas and sources

*Integration of sources- Does it flow smoothly into the context of the essay or is it dropped awkwardly such as a quote with no signal phrase, or a paraphrase with no backing commentary or analysis so that it seems that it is out of place in the confines of the essay.

*Appropriate Voice: Formal
1st person when using narrative or personal opinion, ( Newspaper Editorials, Narrative Essays, Fiction)
2nd person is best for giving instructions. (Guided Meditations, Repair Manuals)
3rd person is appropriate for analysis and objectivity. (Most Academic Essays, some fiction, News Articles,

As a rule of thumb, use the 3rd person most of the time, and use the 1st person when you feel it is most appropriate.

*Creativity and Passion-- Are you writing to meet the assignment or are you engaged in the process. Choose a topic and question that you enjoy, not what you think will be the easiest.

* Rough Draft-- Is it attached to the back of the final draft? Is it really rough, or did you only do one draft, and are trying to get the points? Remember this class is about process as much as product. If you have more than one rough draft, turn in the one most different from the final copy. A rough draft should be at least 2 pages long for the short papers and 4 pages for the final copy.

*Editing and Revision -- Remember that Editing is similar to Proofreading. Don't rely on spell check to correct everything. Go back over your paper, use a dictionary, get a friend or peer to look at it. Read it out loud to a friend. Revision means "to view again" How many times have you read and reconsidered your work?

* Drafts-- It is agood idea to print out a draft every now and then. This way, if your printer breaks on you, and your computer crashes, at least you have a draft to turn in. It is better to get a Low D than an F.

Papers returned usually within 2 weeks. I will when possible, meet with each of you individually to go over your paper after I finish grading so that you better understand what areas need concentration for future papers.
