In Class Writing will be a very important component of this class. Nearly every day we will do some.

What I want is a double-spaced full page of writing. Make it clear. Make it thoughtful.

I grade simply, no comments just checks, check plusses, check minuses, and zeros.

There is very little "homework" in this class.
We have assigned reading, and you are responsible for anything I assign additionally as well.

Quizzes- Any time during a class, I may tell you to close your books, take out a sheet of paper, put your name at the top, and answer a few questions. Some quizzes will be very easy, some will be hard. Some will be to see if you are paying attention or reading the material. If you are late, absent, or leave early, you will get a zero on the quiz. Quizzes will be waived for officially excused absences. There could be as many as 100 of these, and as few as ten. 3 lowest scores will be dropped. Most of these will be unannouced.

Participation points: I grade this component holistically based on your contributions to discussion, group work, presentations, etc... Poor attendance will affect this grade negatively. Perfect attendance will help it.

There are no make ups on ICWs.
There are no make up quizzes

Extra Credit. Simply go to a poetry event. I have calendars. Go to one that I am at, come say hi so I know that you are there, watch it. Write a response paragraph and hand it in( You must see enough of the poetry to respond in a paragraph. You get one point for doing that.

Attendance. You should not miss any class. Any class missed for personal or other reasons will affect your grade negatively in some way

2 weeks of absences allowed. That is 2 days for a once a week class, 4 days for a 2 day a week class, and 6 days for a 3 day per week class.
Official Excuses:
Doctor's note, university sanctioned event (Sports, Debate, Band, etc.), Religious holidays (notify me in advance). This means if you are sick, get a doctor's note.

Late Papers- Will be docked 10% per day late.

If you have an official excuse, I will give you an extra day per day excused.

Portfolio: All four of your papers (Graded Drafts, rough drafts, peer response) as well as both of your exams will be placed in a pocket folder and handed to me at the end of the semester.

Optional Revision: All of your formal papers are eligible for revision and grade consideration. At the end of the semester in your portfolio, include with the original drafts a revised copy of the paper and an annotation of all the changes. If the paper(s) in my mind is markedly improved, I may change the grade to a higher grade.
